And these are the possible causes

Your blood pressure is usually one of the first things that is measured when you see your GP. Not only high blood pressure, but also low blood pressure (hypotension) can lead to health problems. How do you recognize low blood pressure and what can be the causes?

Normal values

First of all, of course, it is important to know what a normal blood pressure looks like. Your blood pressure depends, among other things, on your gender and age. In general, for a normal blood pressure, the diastolic pressure does not exceed 95 mmHg and the systolic pressure does not exceed 140 mmHg. If, however, both the diastolic and systolic pressure are much lower, then your blood pressure might be too low. For women, this translates to a blood pressure lower than 100 over 60. For men this is slightly higher: 110 over 70.

Symptoms of low blood pressure

If you experience no symptoms at all, your blood pressure is probably normal. Even if your values are very low, this does not necessarily mean that you experience any complaints. Do you recognize any of the following symptoms? If so, your blood pressure might be too low.

  • Dizziness, especially after getting up from a chair
  • Blurred vision or seeing black spots
  • Fatigue
  • Lightheadedness
  • Nausea
  • Fainting

Possible causes

In most cases low blood pressure is inconvenient, but not a sign of an underlying disease. Women can suffer from low blood pressure due to heavy menstrual bleeding or during pregnancy. Besides, certain medicines can lower blood pressure (as a side effect). If you have been very nauseous and have vomited, your blood pressure may also have dropped. Finally, a low blood pressure can indicate (internal) blood loss, infections, anaemia or dysrhythmia. If you experience any symptoms, please visit your GP to find out what the underlying cause is.

Treatment and tips

The treatment of low blood pressure depends entirely on what its cause is. Sometimes the cause cannot be founexerd, which makes treatment impossible. If your blood pressure is too low, there are a few things to take into account. For example, always stand up very slowly after lying or sitting down for a long time to prevent dizziness and blurred vision. It is also extra important for people with low blood pressure to drink enough water, especially after exertion or in warm weather. If you take a sauna or hot bath, be extra careful when getting up.
